Otuzco — Marianist Sightseeing Link to Trujillo index

Our hosts in Trujillo, and some of Uncle Nelson's colleagues in Lima, are involved in several development and outreach activities in the Otuzco area, and it made a quite interesting change of pace for us to meet some of the people there and tour their facilities. They are most proud of their radio station, Chami Radio (named for Father William Joseph Chaminade, founder of the Order), which broadcasts general news, agricultural programming, and religious features.

They are also building and remodeling office, residential, and meeting space in this complex of buildings, the Centro de Formación Pastoral "Maria, Madre de Buen Consejo". In the middle is the adorable child of the people who showed us around, fed us, and generally made us feel very welcome.

Environmentally conscientious, the center uses this solar water heater, as shown to us on the roof of the buidling. The gray building behind us on the right is the church on Otuzco's main square.

Here is the view of the town from the roof, from the window of their library, and a look at their new construction:

We also took a drive up into the hills near town where, in addition to the radio tower, is located an agricultural development project that is trying to diversify the products that can be raised by the farmers in the area. Along the road up to this project, we stopped at the remains of an old adobe house, which provided us with a nice framed shot of Tito, our driver, and some lovely views of the town as well.

In the middle below is the nursery where the new plants are nurtured until they're ready for planting in the fields. The young man in the photos at left and right is the nursery's caretaker. The little boy is his nephew.

Here is the whole family group, with assorted friends, at their house near the fields:

Here we are walking up the hillside. The pretty yellow flowers were quite common in the area.

There were also wheat fields nearby, some donkeys hauling wood, and, even closer, a farmer working with some oxen, affording Henry some good photo ops.

The road to the nursery area also crossed over a nice stream, which afforded even more opportunities for pictures. Here is our car on the bridge and a garden you could see down below.

And here are two pretty shots of the stream, and one of an Otuzco woman doing her laundry, with a helper:
