When Billy received his commission in October of 1942, the event was reported both in the Houston Press and in Humble's inhouse news magazine The Humble Club Bulletin. The Press article was dated October 21, according the date typed in, and Billy had two fellow Houstonians with him in navigator training in Hondo:
