Early on in my London stay I realized that charming, amusing, puzzling, and just weird, signs would be a great subject for photos. Two characteristics of British signs that I couldn't help but notice were politeness and an elevated vocabularly. But some were just funny, too. I compiled several blog posts of sign pix, and you can see them all here. This page gives a selection of my favorites, from London and elsewhere, and you can see more in the Flickr set. Enjoy!
Bicycles warrant lots of signage...
in Wellington Plaza |
many signs like this in Kensington & Chelsea |
in Bishop's Park |
Lots of signs to watch for on the roads if you're driving (or parking, or trying to) or even just walking...
parking notice at Vietnamese Embassy: "we will be grateful if residents temporarily concede the use of parking spaces...." |
|
puzzled about this as I was? here's the scoop |
sign near Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh |
thank goodness for these helpful signs in my neighborhood! |
Warnings of various kinds abound...
Cambridge train station prohibition |
a more direct notice |
Ice cream: another subject requiring some signage...
ice cream truck near the Thames |
in Greenwich...where children don't mind? |
Lots of signs in the parks...
near the Serpentine: no dogs worrying wildlife here |
or disturbing them here in St. James's Park |
you can't feed them here, either |
"Winston: World's Best Dog" memorialized in Battersea Park |
And some signs whose messages just sound so British, you know you're in England...
super-polite sign in Harrod's |
cricket fans will understand |
I hope the troops appreciate the "break" |
