All of us loved getting out in the countryside while we lived in Montana, and we went on lots of family camping trips. Here are two pictures from an early excursion. The slides were mailed to our address on the base, so it was during the first year we were in Great Falls. I love seeing all the camping and picnic gear on the table, much of which looks very familiar and holds lots of good memories. As does the tent. Note the items hanging on the line. And what a lovely forest!
Here is another photo that shows a lot of campsite detail. I believe it was taken some time later, since most of the other black-and-white camping photos were, but the campsite setup looks very similar to those above.
And here is another early photo, judging by how old Joan looks in the swing. I don't remember this set of swings at all, but the background suggests it was at a campground rather than a city park:
Here are a couple more photos that were probably taken in the late '50's. Joan and I look a bit older, and the glasses I'm wearing in the one on the left date it after second grade for me, at least, since that's when I started wearing them. I don't know who took these pictures; Dad might have set up the autoshutter.
These have a more definite look of autoshutter shots. Maybe Dad was thinking about Christmas card photos? Although the wooden knives Joan and I are brandishing don't exactly set a holiday tone. We both remember these knives very well, and we even found one saved at Mom's house many years later!
Here are some more portraits taken while camping. I think I probably took the first two:
These three, probably taken at the same time as the one on the left above (note the same clothing), were probably autoshuttered:
One of our favorite campgrounds was one that we hardly ever had to share with other campers. I don't remember the name of it, or where it was; perhaps it was far enough from the city, or maybe it was just hidden away, but we considered it almost our own private campground. I imagine that the the following pictures were probably taken there, because I can't imagine us disrobing for a swim if other people had been about. I also can't remember going so far into a mountain stream—most of my memories of such places are that the water was too cold for more than a toe-dip! But maybe this was an extra-hot day. I especially like the first two pictures of me and Joan, taken either before we decided to go further into the water, or on a different trip than the others.
